"If You're Going To Try, Go All The Way"
"Otherwise don't even start..."
Wise words by Charles Bukowski that always adorned my walls, my mind or my desktop computer background as a student. If you haven’t seen the poem performed by Bono from U2 you’re truly in for a treat. Essentially, Bukowsi talks about passion, raw, hard, human passion for something that we want to succeed at. Something that sits on your mind so much it begins to drive you mad. We have all had to sacrifice things to open doors in certain directions hoping that the one we’ve opened will lead to us to go where we needed to go in the first place. This process can be isolating as only we, in our own minds can truly determine what drives us to our envisioned destiny.
When I was first introduced to this poem I was in my first year of film school. My writing lecturer said it was something she had always loved but to be honest it scared me. The depth and wisdom of forfeiting love, food or our reputation for a passion was alien to me because I hadn't realised what my passion was. I knew I liked film, and art meant a lot to me but it was only once university was over that freewill came into play and working on projects in my own time frame meant I understood to make this lifestyle happen I truly had to fight for it. And once that happened it was as clear as a cool night and the stars began to truly shine. You know your purpose and loosing anything to make sure you can fulfill your dreams no longer scares you. It has become a freedom, a gift.
Do it, Do it, Do it…You will ride life straight to perfect laughter, it’s the only good fight there is.”
