As of January this year I have a positive net worth. And although I still have a student loan (HECS/HELP for those in Australia), I feel like I am in a place where I am empowered by my future. I feel healthy, happy and know I’m now in a position to take a career path I love instead of one I need to be able to keep up with the Jonses.
As we find ourselves inside, at home and with the time to finally get to everything we’ve had on our to-do lists. Now may be as good a time as any to review our finances, look at what other women in the creative industries are doing to cash flow their lives and how we can all increase our financial literacy.
A lovely family affair, Chloe came to me a year ago looking for a photographer for her special day. Somehow I always have gorgeous, laid back brides who are happy to let me capture their day and moments with free reign. We're a pretty lucky generation. Everything we could ever dream of is at our fingertips. That said, everything at our fingertips is a reiteration of how imperfect our lives are. I understand you can only read so many inspiring quotes and see so many perfectly styled houses on Pinterest to feel like maybe you're not a success. I can't sit still. I admit it to myself and my partner often. Even when i'm 'relaxing' and taking some time out, I'll be reading a book on a new topic, teaching myself some ridiculous (perhaps unnecessary) new skill or planning, imagining or dreaming up a new project.
So I am finally on the other side of the Melbourne premiere of RISE. I am also on the other side of a tear jerked standing ovation and a night I will never forget.
A short sweet visit last week and I must say, Melbourne was on its best behaviour. I had 28°C days, no rain, no last minute cold snaps or wind. It was enchanting.
It hasn't caught up with me yet that this is actually happening. I'm a normal girl from a small town who always bit off too much to chew. But here we are, five years out of High School and with my first feature film under my belt. It has been a tough two-and-a-half year journey, and if I told you it was all rose coloured skies I'd be lying.
I was driving through the center of town and saw the entire Maryborough High School oval covered in swags, tents, teachers and students. A little confused I went home to investigate by the only means I know how, Google... Maryborough has hosted the Human Powered Vehicle Challenge for twelve years which, essentially consist of high school students riding spaceship looking bikes over a 24hr period.
When it comes to taking photographs, yes!
It was an early December day and the winter was setting in late, the trees were still a beautiful hue of red as I sat in the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden park in Tokyo. We were due to catch our flight back to Coolangatta later that day ...
Last Monday marked a pretty big night for my career thus far. The Feature Film RISE that I have been working on for the past two years is well on its way to making it to cinemas.
